There’s no river quite like the McKenzie any where in America. It bubbles up through ancient volcanic fishers high in the Oregon Cascade Mountains. Cool, pure, crystal clear, then flows westward through one of Oregon's most scenic river Valleys. Catch and release angling is allowed year round on the McKenzie but the most predicable condition occur from late March to Late November, in most years. Summer Steelhead are also in the river from May and some seasons into December. The best hatches spread up stream from the lower river near Springfield. Beginning in March, waves blue green olives and March brown Mayflies transition into clouds of caddis by late May. On the McKenzie the angling opportunities are diverse and a swung wet fly can bring some of the biggest trout to the net and anglers should always expect the crushing take of a summer steelhead! Summer steelhead hold in the same water as trout in the McKenzie River and are incidentally caught throughout the season on many trips. Starting in May each season a portion of the McKenzie is planted with hatchery trout that are often part of my shore lunch.
